Speaking Life - What You Say to Yourself Matters (Part 3): Learning to Bless Yourself Like God Does
Speaking Life - What You Say to Yourself Matters (Part 3)
Learning to Bless Yourself Like God Does
Hi sweet friend,
If you’ve been journeying through this Speak Life series, you’ve already taken brave steps—recognizing harmful thought patterns, breaking agreements with lies, and choosing to renew your mind with truth.
Today, we’re taking one final, beautiful step: learning to bless yourself like God does.
That might sound unfamiliar—maybe even uncomfortable—especially if you’ve been taught to stay humble, quiet, or not "make it about yourself." But here's the truth:
Speaking life over yourself isn’t pride. It’s agreement with God.
It’s saying, “I believe what You say about me, Lord—even when I don’t feel it yet.”
It’s choosing to walk in the identity He has already declared over you.
It’s learning to echo Heaven’s perspective, instead of letting insecurity or shame have the mic.
God Speaks Blessing Over You—Do You?
Let’s pause and really receive this:
📖 “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness;
He will quiet you by His love;
He will exult over you with loud singing.” — Zephaniah 3:17 (ESV)
Did you catch that?
God is not indifferent toward you. He’s not standing off at a distance, disappointed or tired of your struggle. He is in your midst—present, attentive, engaged.
And more than that, He rejoices over you.
Picture it for a moment: the Creator of the universe, the One who spoke stars into being, is rejoicing over you—not reluctantly, but with gladness. He is quieting your anxious thoughts and weary heart with His love. He is singing over you—exulting like a proud Father who can’t help but delight in His daughter.
What would change if you believed that?
What if, instead of brushing past this verse, you sat in it long enough for it to soak into the places where shame or insecurity still whisper?
So often, we’re careful not to speak too highly of ourselves for fear of sounding prideful. But God has already spoken blessing over you. Not because you’ve earned it, but because it’s who you are to Him: loved, chosen, delighted in.
And if He speaks over you with joy, affection, and celebration—isn’t it time you started speaking that way too?
Blessing Yourself Isn’t Selfish—It’s Spiritual Agreement
Let’s be honest: the idea of “blessing yourself” can feel strange at first. Maybe even a little self-indulgent. But here’s the truth we often forget:
Blessing yourself isn’t prideful. It’s alignment.
There’s a big difference between the world’s version of self-promotion and the Kingdom’s call to speak truth. Pride says, “I’ve got this all together. I don’t need anyone.” But blessing yourself from a place of spiritual agreement says, “I know who my Father is, and I’m learning to believe what He says about me.”
It’s not about inflating your ego—it’s about fortifying your spirit.
When you declare, “I am loved. I am chosen. I am equipped,” you’re not bragging. You’re not pretending to be perfect. You’re choosing to stand on what God has already spoken, instead of the lies that have tried to hold you down.
And here’s why that matters: because we are constantly speaking to ourselves. Whether we realize it or not, there’s a conversation running in our minds all day long.
If we don’t intentionally choose to speak life, the lies will fill the silence.
You need truth to be louder than fear.
You need blessing to be stronger than shame.
You need to agree with God, even when your feelings or circumstances try to tell you otherwise.
Blessing yourself is a holy act of faith—it’s looking in the mirror and saying, “I may not feel strong today, but God says I’m more than a conqueror.”
It’s whispering over your tired soul, “You are held. You are healing. You are still being used by God.”
It’s not pride. It’s permission to walk in the truth of who you are.
Pride says, “Look at me, I’m everything.”
Truth says, “Look at God—He made me, and what He made is good.”
When you bless yourself with God’s words, you’re not exalting yourself above others. You’re coming into alignment with the identity He’s already written over you.
You’re not inflating your ego—you’re fortifying your spirit.
And you need that. We all do.
How to Start Speaking Blessing Over Yourself
It might feel awkward at first—especially if you’re used to harsh self-talk or downplaying your worth. But here’s how you begin:
1. Speak to Yourself Like Someone God Loves
If you wouldn’t say it to a hurting friend, don’t say it to yourself.
Instead, learn to echo what God would say over your life. Speak to yourself from a place of love, hope, and gentle strength.
-
“God is proud of me.”
-
“I am growing, even when I feel stuck.”
-
“I carry peace and joy, because His Spirit lives in me.”
2. Write a Daily Blessing or Declaration
Each morning (or evening), write one sentence that blesses who you are and who you are becoming.
-
“I bless my heart to rest in God’s love today.”
-
“I bless my mind to think thoughts of truth and peace.”
-
“I bless my words to build and not break.”
Your own voice can become a healing tool when you let the Holy Spirit guide it.
3. Use Scripture as a Foundation
God’s Word is the most powerful blessing you can speak. It’s living and active—so when you declare Scripture, you’re declaring Heaven’s authority over your life.
Speak These Declarations Over Yourself
Here are some truths you can write down, speak aloud, or pray when you need to remind your heart of who you are:
-
“I am chosen, holy, and dearly loved.” (Colossians 3:12)
-
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
-
“I am not forgotten. God is with me.” (Isaiah 41:10)
-
“I am rooted and established in love.” (Ephesians 3:17)
-
“God’s joy over me is louder than my shame.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
-
“I carry peace, not panic. I carry purpose, not pressure.”
-
“I am growing into the woman God created me to be—on purpose, with grace.”
Speak them slowly. Let your heart soak them in. Repeat them often.
Journal Prompt: A Blessing to Myself
Take a quiet moment today. Open your journal and finish this prompt:
“Today, I bless myself with…”
Maybe it’s peace, or grace, or permission to rest.
Maybe it’s the courage to try again, or the kindness to forgive yourself.
Let the Holy Spirit guide your words.
Then ask:
-
What lie am I replacing with this blessing?
-
What would it look like to live today from this truth?
Prayer of Blessing
Lord, thank You for delighting in me—even on the days I struggle to delight in myself. Teach me to speak life the way You do. Help me break the habit of harsh self-talk and learn to bless myself with grace, truth, and love. Let my voice echo Yours. Let my thoughts agree with Heaven. I receive Your joy over me, and I choose to walk in it. Amen.
From My Heart to Yours
Sweet sister, you were never meant to live under constant criticism—even from your own thoughts. You don’t have to wait until you “feel worthy” to speak blessing over your life. You already are—because your worth was spoken by the One who formed you, loves you, and rejoices over you with singing.
Keep speaking life. Keep declaring truth. Keep aligning your words with what Heaven says.
And if you ever forget? Just come back to this:
You are loved. You are chosen. You are His.
Next time, we’ll begin a new 3-part series on Rooted – Growing Deeper in God When Life Feels Unstable. In our next 3-part series, we’ll shift our focus from the words we speak to the foundation we’re standing on.
Because sometimes life feels anything but steady.
Plans fall apart. Expectations disappoint. The future feels uncertain.
But even in the shaking—you can grow deeper.
You can be rooted in the One who never changes.
You can live with unshakable faith even when everything around you feels unstable.
We’ll explore:
What to do when life shifts unexpectedly
How to grow spiritually in hidden or hard seasons
And how God can bear fruit through your life, even in the storm
